Skyrim is a really great game. Its a good story to just jump right into. But I would also suggest playing Oblivion, although it is not a direct sequel to Skyrim.

Ive only played skyrim and the oblivion which is just before skyrim. The references that skyrim offers which links to oblivion is minimal. Had i not played oblivion, i still would understand enough to fully enjoy the game. And most references ive seen are explained anyway so its all good. I also doubt that all skyrim players have played all the elder scrolls games as their are locations which even refer to the first elder scroll game. Yes, you will enjoy and understand the game. The main quest is completely different to the previous games. Although an assassin guild has quite a few references regarding to the previous game, oblivion. But i think that it isnt enough to stop you from understanding skyrim.
